The science of positive psychology is the official study of happiness and wellbeing. I have obtained a Master of Applied Positive Psychology (Dean's Honours List Award & First Class Honours) from the University of Melbourne. Here are my five top tips for sustainable happiness.
1. BE GRATEFUL
Gratitude has been shown to boost motivation and energy, as well as lead to self-improvement and positive change. Take five minutes every night to write down three things for which you feel grateful and track your mood and experiences as you go.
2. ENGAGE IN RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS
Participants in research experiments who engaged in five acts of kindness each week for six weeks, experienced increased happiness and life satisfaction. It is even better if these acts are different each time!
3. GET CONNECTED
Relationships are among the highest predictors of wellbeing across all cultures. And here's an extra tip: Make sure you are surrounding yourself with people who really do enhance your wellbeing - those who make you laugh, feel good and are genuinely interested in your success. Cull the rest.
4. FIND A CAREER THAT GIVES YOU MEANING AND PURPOSE
Having a sense of purpose and meaning have consistently been linked to improved life-satisfaction. Yet, where do we spend most of our precious hours? You guessed it - in the workplace! Therefore, it is fundamental to your wellbeing that you find yourself a job where you can feel impassioned and fulfilled. It's important that you get this decision right, regardless of your stage in life, because it can become a very costly and time-sapping exercise if you are not crystal clear on where you're headed and why.
If you haven't been happy in your workplace for awhile and are looking for a career change or business overhaul, then I highly recommend you check out my Purpose Finder package, before embarking on any major changes. This series of six, structured coaching sessions will uncover your 'why', dismantle blocks and work with your resources to bring your true purpose into being! Remember, doing this package now can save you from financial and energy loss in the long run.
5. GET CREATIVE
We are all creative at heart. If you find this hard to believe, consider a child that you know who is under 2 years of age. All children in this age bracket dance when they hear music, hum tunes and draw. In other words, as children we were creating much of the time. When that impulse is quashed, our natural joy starts to diminish. Wouldn't it feel wonderful to get yours back?
The Optimum Mindset™ system uses your own, innate creativity to find solutions and is designed to be non-threatening. You don't have to feel like you have any talent whatsoever, as it is the process we are interested in, not the finished product. If you sign up to any of the courses on the website, you will be gently guided back to this natural place of joy. Trust me, you won't look back. Alternatively, just pick up a pen and start drawing or get singing in the shower again. Your whole being will thank you.
